Genelec museum event helps elevate the visitor experience

Audio plays a vital role in shaping the visitor experience, offering context, interpretation, and storytelling that deepens the understanding and appreciation of artworks, artifacts, and exhibitions. It has the power to captivate audiences, evoke emotions, and create lasting impressions. For these reasons, museums are a category of AV where the clarity, intelligibility and uniform coverage of Genelec loudspeakers have proved indispensable – particularly with the deployment of increasingly complex immersive soundscapes.
Held at Helsinki’s prestigious Art Museum Ateneum, the event brought together 70 guests to hear some fascinating insight from top industry experts and exchange knowledge with fellow museum professionals.
The programme opened with a presentation on “Sound and Emotion” by Thomas Lund, Senior Technologist at Genelec. Focusing on Auditory Envelopment, a primary influencer of human emotion, Thomas explained some recent studies on the topic and what they’ve revealed.
Johan Ahrenfelt, Manager of Exhibition Technology at Moesgaard Museum in Denmark, discussed “The immersive approach to exhibition design & the use of sound design at Moesgaard”. In his talk, Johan reviewed the museum’s approach to exhibition technology, how this has developed through various exhibitions over the years, and the lessons learned.
Finally, Finnish Sound Designer Aki Päivärinne from OiOi Collective gave a presentation entitled ”Skin is an airport – sound is a time machine. Designing sounds for museums, sound art and public spaces in 2030.” In this session, Aki revealed the creative process in designing audio for various environments, and the role of sound design as part of the narrative in exhibition design.
“I feel that this event was really appreciated by the audience,” commented event host Sami Mäkinen, Genelec’s Installed Sound Sales Manager in Finland. “Meeting face to face like this gives us such a valuable opportunity to share knowledge with our customers, and also to understand the challenges they’re looking to overcome. It was great to see the level of dialogue the event generated and be able to participate in it.”
Sami concluded by saying: “We’d like to thank everyone that took time out of their busy schedules to join us. Given its success, this format of event is definitely something that we plan to explore in other markets.”
