Dancing Trash Heroes Challenge Everyone to Care for Their Environment
Two funk loving, bicycle-riding friends, the duo rides the streets of Finland with a mission to clear away discarded trash, play some great tunes and break out some awesome moves. Best of all, they do it all using specially modified cargo bikes that fold out to form full DJ and percussion stations, complete with Genelec loudspeakers.
The idea behind Trash Heroes dates back to 2014, when dancer/choreographer Panu Varstala took to Facebook with his idea for the perfect Helsinki-based summer job – becoming a super hero on a cargo bike who collected empty bottles, danced, sang and left everyone feeling great. Inspired by the concept, dancer Antti Lahti signed up and Trash Heroes was born.
Today, the pair have a clear mission statement:
-
Cruise around the city with their bicycles
-
Clean up areas one by one, to make them better for dancing
-
Dance
-
Move on to the next destination
Of course there is slightly more to it than that, not least the remarkable bicycles they ride. ‘Solar Funk Sound System’ unfolds into a fully operational DJ station complete with a pair of Technics SL-1210 turntables, a Pioneer DJM-T1 mixer and Genelec 8030C speakers, while ‘Loota Percussion Funk Sound’ includes wooden custom-made drums, electronic drum pads and much more plus a Yamaha MG06X mixer and, again, Genelec 8030C monitors. All this works with 100% solar energy.
Genelec visited Trash Heroes in the picturesque town of Porvoo. Find out more by watching the video below or discover here how you can participate.
