At Home with DJ Creeps

What inspired you to start making or recording music?

When I was 7 years old I randomly said to my parents that I wanted to become a DJ, and when I turned 8 I got my first DJ lesson! I liked it so much that I wanted more lessons. I picked the lessons up really quick and started to make serious progress. Eventually I started playing at school parties, and from there on it started growing and eventually reached the clubs and festivals. But I also wanted to start producing music, so when I was 13 years old I started with lessons in producing. I got those lessons for a year and a half, and then I started to evolve my own sound.

What was your first ever piece of recording gear?

My first piece of recording gear was my laptop, and my Novation MIDI keyboard.

In which room is your home studio based, and were there any challenges in setting it up?

My studio is based in the second part of my bedroom. When we moved into this house my room was actually 2 rooms, but we removed the wall partly. But when I started producing seriously there became more problems because of the weird shape of my studio room – and the hole in the wall! The acoustics were really bad, so I had to put up curtains to isolate some of the sounds.

Which Genelec loudspeaker model do you have?

I use the Genelec 8030C. They’re perfect for the size of my room, and Laidback Luke advised me to buy them. I couldn’t be happier.

What do you think of the speakers, and what do you like about them?

I really love the speakers for their neutral and clear sound, which is really important for producing music.

Which three artists would you love to collaborate with in a Zoom lockdown session?

It would be a dream come true if I could collaborate with Afrojack, Brohug & Laidback Luke to make a crazy Bass house banger!

What’s your top tip for being creative at home?

If you aren’t in a creative mood, try listening to your favourite music and just relax – or do something fun while listening, till you get in a creative mood.

Have you picked up any new skills during lockdown?

I started to really work on my sound design, to make my own unique sounds.

Since working at home, what has become your ’Desert Island’ piece of gear? What can’t you live without?

My laptop and speakers – because I use them every day and without them I wouldn’t be able to produce any music….
